Civil Service Examination (IAS) Syllabus
Preliminary Examination Paper - I (200 marks) Duration : Two hours
Current events of national and international importance. History of India and Indian National Movement. Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World. Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc. Economic and Social Development -Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc. General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialisation General Science. Note 1 : Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper- II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper. Note 2 : The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type. Note 3: It is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the Papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination for the purpose of evaluation. Therefore a candidate will be disqualified in case he/ she does not appear in both the papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination.
Mains Examination
The objective of the Civil Services (Main) Examination is to select candidates for the various A-Grade services and posts of the Union Government. To achieve this U.P.S.C. has mentioned that the main examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory. So, to evaluate candidate’s this trait, the main examination will consist of written examinations on various subjects. Written examination will consist of 9 papers, which carries total 2000 marks. In Main Examination General Studies papers carries 600 marks (Two papers), along with two optional subjects which carries 600 marks each (Two papers for first & second optional subjects, total four papers), plus one Essay paper comprises 200 marks. So the total marks of the Main Exam is 2000 marks. Moreover candidates must qualify the Compulsory papers for evaluation of their Mains Optional papers, Hence Compulsory papers are qualifying in nature. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking purpose. Part I
Written Examination carrying a maximum of 600 marks in the subjects as shown below. Paper-I : General Ability Test (English, General Knowledge and Psychological Test) maximum marks: 200 Paper-II : Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) maximum marks: 200 Paper-III: Mathematics maximum marks: 200 CLICK HERE FOR SYLLABUS (PAPER 1) CLICK HERE FOR SYLLABUS (PAPER 2) CLICK HERE FOR SYLLABUS (PAPER 3) The papers in all the subjects will consist of Objective (multiple choice answer) Type questions only. The Question Papers (Test Booklets) will be set in English only. In the question papers, wherever required, SI units will be used. Question Papers will be approximately of the Intermediate standard. Candidates must write the answers in their own hand. In no circumstances, will they be allowed the help of a scribe to write the answers for them. Blind candidates will, however, be allowed to write the examination with the help of a scribe. An extra time of 20 minutes for each paper will be permitted to the blind candidates for papers (Objective type) of duration two hours each. The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination. Candidates are not permitted to use calculators for answering objective type papers (Test Booklets). They should not, therefore, bring the same inside the Examination Hall.
Part II
Personality Test carrying a maximum of 200 marks in respect of only those candidates who are declared qualified on the results of written examination under Part I Combined Medical Services Examination
Part-I WRITTEN EXAMINATION - (500 marks)
The candidates will take the written examination in two Papers, each Paper carrying a maximum of 250 marks. Each Paper will be of two hours duration.
Part-II Personality Test carrying 100 marks
Personality Test carrying 100 marks of such of the candidates
who qualify on the results of the written examination.

(i) Written Examination:
The written examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC),
and it comprises two papers. Paper I and Paper II.
Paper I : General Ability and Intelligence - 250 Marks
The questions in this paper will be of Objective (Multiple Answers) Type in which the questions will be set in English as well as Hindi.
Paper II : General Studies, Essay and Comprehension - 200 Marks
In this paper candidates will be allowed the option of writing the Essay Component in English or Hindi, but the medium of Precis Writing, Comprehension Components and other communications/language skills will be English only. NOTE-I : Candidates should ensure that in Paper II they write the answers only in the medium allowed by the Commission for the different Components as mentioned above. No credit will be given for answers written in a medium other than the one allowed in the Paper. Candidates will be required to indicate the medium of Essay Component in the Attendance Lists and on the Answer Book. No credit will be given for the Essay Component if the candidate indicates a medium on the Attendance List and on the Answer Book other than the one in which he/she has written the Essay. NOTE-II: There will be minimum qualifying marks separately in each Paper as may be fixed by the Commission in their discretion. Paper-I will be evaluated first and evaluation of Paper-II will be done only of those candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in Paper-I.
(ii) Physical Standards/Physical Efficiency Tests and Medical Standards Tests:
Candidates who are declared qualified in the written examination will be summoned for Physical Standards/Physical Efficiency Tests and Medical Standards Tests. Those candidates who meet the prescribed Physical Standards, specified in Appendix-VI, will be put through the Physical Efficiency Tests. (b) Interview for intelligence and personality test (vide Part ‘B’ of this Appendix) of such candidates as may be called for interview at one of the Services Selection Centres. 2.
